About Us

Drs. Heffernan, Sengelmann and Jackson share a love of dermatology and education.  They came together in 2018 to launch the First Annual Santa Barbara Dermatology Meeting at the Ojai Valley Inn.  We envisioned a meeting that would be collegial, family friendly and fun.  Focused on cutting edge clinical information in medical, pediatric, cosmetic, surgical dermatology and dermatopathology.  We brought together the best of the dermatology community to the Ojai Valley Inn in April 2018.  The WORLD’S GREATEST FACULTY was highlighted by Dr. Tim Berger, our Keynote Speaker.  Perennial fan favorites launched in Year 1 included: Grand Rounds, Therapeutic Master Panel, Reconstruction Master Panel, and the Live Patient Cosmetic Demonstration.  We committed to making this THE GREATEST CLINICAL DERMATOLOGY MEETING YOU HAVE EVER ATTENDED.  Everyone’s favorite moment was our first wine sharing event on Mike’s patio.

Our 2nd Annual Meeting was held in late May 2019.  The word got out, we had more attendees, a bigger faculty and more sponsors.  We struggled to find enough rooms for everyone.  Greg Cameron joined the team as our Meeting Administrator.  The faculty was highlighted by our Keynote Speaker Dr. Jeff Callen a mentor to Mark and Mike.  The Wine Appreciation Event was a blowout that filled an entire courtyard.  Dr. Alan Menter had a beautiful day opening bottles and filling everyone’s glasses.

Our 3rd Annual Meeting was pushed back a year by the Covid pandemic.  Once restrictions were lifted and the resort reopened everyone was so excited to get back together in November 2021.  Our Keynote speaker was Dr. Andy Blauvelt.  Our Wine Appreciation event had grown so much it had to be moved to the Shangri-La Pavillion.  This meeting was one big celebration.

Our 4th Annual Meeting was held in December 2022.  We exceeded all our prior attendance records.  Our Keynote Speaker was everyone’s favorite Dr. Mark Lebwohl.  The faculty was a Washington University Dermatology reunion with our former residents Drs. Tull, Allen, and Anadkat joining Mike and Roberta on the podium.

In an effort to get our meeting back to the Spring, our 5th Annual Meeting was held in May 2024.  Our Keynote Speaker was Dr. Ken Gordon.  The faculty was highlighted by Drs. Jennifer Soung, Larry Eichenfed, Alex Miller, David Fiorentino, Kavita Mariwalla, Melanie Palm, and Julien Davis.  We launched our inaugural Resident Symposium with presentations by Drs. Nicole Bolick and Andrea Gilmore.

Our 7th Annual Meeting will be in December 2026.  We have committed to holding our meeting over the first weekend in December going forward.  This way we can have the most space and optimize the number of attendees.

The Santa Barbara Dermatology Meeting is co-sponsored by a joint providership between the Santa Barbara Dermatology Foundation, Inc and the University of Louisville School of Medicine. This activity is planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). The University of Louisville School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Santa Barbara Dermatology Foundation, Inc was originally founded in 2020 as the Foundation for Dermatology Education, Inc; subsequently becoming the Santa Barbara Dermatology Foundation, Inc in 2024. The Corporation was founded for the purpose to advance charitable, and educational purposes by planning, organizing, promoting, and managing professional conferences and continuing education to advance scientific and medical knowledge in the field of dermatology. The Corporation operates as a private “operating foundation”, to engage in any other activity the overall purpose of which is intended to further the charitable purposes of the Corporation. The Corporation is dedicated to and is organized and operated exclusively for charitable purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Code.
