Timothy Berger, MD:  Four Difficult Skin Problems

Dr. Timothy Berger is a dermatologist who specializes in rare, challenging and complex skin disorders. He cares for patients with autoimmune bullous disease, viral skin diseases, sexually transmitted diseases of the skin, skin diseases of the Tropics, photosensitivity disorders (overreaction to sunlight), infectious diseases of the skin, warts and pruritus (itching).

Berger has been inducted into the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators, an honor bestowed on faculty members who have shown particular dedication to medical student teaching. In 1989, he was honored with the Henry J. Kaiser Award for Excellence in Teaching. In both 1991 and 2001, the UCSF residents in dermatology named him teacher of the year.

Berger serves on the board of the American Academy of Dermatology. He has published more than 125 scientific articles, 12 book chapters and two books.

Jeffrey, MD FACP  FAAD:  What’s New in the Medical Literature

Jeffrey P. Callen, MD was born in Chicago, Il. He went to University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin (1965-8) and University of Michigan Medical School (1968-72). He completed residencies in internal medicine and dermatology at the University of Michigan Affiliated Hospitals (1972-75 and 1975-77 respectively). He is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine (1975) and the American Board of Dermatology (1977, 1999, and 2009). <p>In 1977 Dr. Callen joined the faculty at the University of Louisville. He became the Residency program director in 1984, a position that he held until July 1, 2016. He was promoted to the rank of Professor as well as being appointed as Chief of the Division of Dermatology in 1988, and still holds the position of Chief of the Division of Dermatology. <p>He has served on the Board of Directors of the Dermatology Foundation (1983-8), the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) (1994-8), Association of Professors of Dermatology (1996-9), the American Board of Dermatology, Inc. (ABD) (2003-2011), the Medical Dermatology Society (2001-2005) and the American Dermatologic Association (2009-2013). He Chaired the AAD’s Council on Education (2003-7). He has been Vice-President of the AAD in 2004-5, President of the Medical Dermatology Society (2006-8), vice president of the ABD 2011 and was President of the Association of Professors of Dermatology (2016-2018). He serves on the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education’s review committee (2017- current). <p>Locally, he has served on the boards of the Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family and Vocational Services, Actors Theatre of Louisville, the Kentucky Arts and Crafts Foundation, and the Speed Art Museum. He and his wife are currently heading the Cinephile Collector’s group for the Speed Art Museum. <p>He was the Associate Editor of the JAMA Dermatology from 2004-2018, and has remained on its editorial board (2018-current) and is Editor in Chief of the Dermatology Section of UpToDate. <p>He is an honorary member of the following organizations: Honorary Corresponding Member, Pacific Dermatologic Association, 1987; Honorary Fellow, North American Clinical Dermatologic Society, April 2007; Medical Dermatology Society, February 2011; Florida Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery – May 2012; and the American Academy of Dermatology, March 2013. He is a Master of Rheumatology (2016) and is the first dermatologist to receive this designation. <p>He has been listed in Best Doctors annually since 1992 and has received the American Academy of Dermatology Thomas Pearson, PhD Education Award. He was given the Medical Dermatology Society’s Lifetime Achievement award in 2011. He was selected by the American Academy of Dermatology to receive the 2017 Master Dermatologist Award. In 2018, the Dermatology Foundation selected him for their Lifetime Career Educator Award.

Andy Blauvelt, MD:  Psoriasis and Heart Disease: Now We Can Make a Difference

Andy Blauvelt received his undergraduate degree at Purdue University, his medical degree at Michigan State University, and his Healthcare MBA from Portland State University/Oregon Health & Science University. Dr. Blauvelt trained in dermatology at the University of Miami and in cellular immunology at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Blauvelt’s clinical and research expertise is in immunology, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and biologic therapies for complex medical dermatology patients, having published over 300 papers and spoken across the world on these topics.

Dr. Mark Lebwohl graduated summa cum laude from Columbia College in 1974 and graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1978.  He completed residencies in internal medicine and dermatology, both at Mount Sinai.

Dr. Lebwohl has been practicing dermatology since 1983.  He is the Dean for Clinical Therapeutics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Chairman Emeritus of the Kimberly and Eric J. Waldman Department of Dermatology at Mount Sinai, a department that he built from a fulltime faculty of two to one of the largest dermatology departments in the country. 

 Dr. Lebwohl has served as president of the New York Dermatological Society, the Manhattan Dermatologic Society, and the New York State Society of Dermatology, and as chairman of the Dermatology Section of the New York Academy of Medicine.  Dr. Lebwohl is a past chairman of the Psoriasis Task Force of the American Academy of Dermatology and has directed numerous AAD symposia including the annual Psoriasis Symposium as well as the AAD annual meeting and summer meeting. In 2015-16 he served as President of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Dr. Lebwohl is chairman emeritus of the Medical Board of the National Psoriasis Foundation.  He is co-scientific director of Corevitas, the largest American psoriasis registry, and founding editor of Psoriasis Forum, now called the Journal of Psoriasis and Psoritic Arthritis.  He has been on the editorial board of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and the Journal of Skin Cancer. He is editor of the Dermatology Section of Scientific American Medicine and co-Editor-in-Chief of Skin, the Journal of Cutaneous Medicine.  Dr. Lebwohl has chaired numerous symposia and has written or edited several books including the first atlas devoted entirely to cutaneous manifestations of systemic disease, and the leading book on dermatologic therapy, Treatment of Skin Disease, now in its sixth edition. His books have been translated into numerous foreign languages, including French, Portuguese, Chinese, Spanish and Polish. Other books include Difficult Diagnoses in Dermatology and Psoriasis.  He has authored or co-authored over 600 publications including articles, chapters and abstracts. Dr. Lebwohl is actively involved in clinical trials of many new dermatologic treatments.

Dr. Kenneth B. Gordon is a professor of dermatology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Dr. Gordon graduated from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and was trained in internal medicine at the Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, and in Dermatology at Northwestern University. Dr. Gordon followed dermatology training with a post-graduate fellowship in basic immunology at Northwestern and continued as a faculty member on a Dermatology Foundation Career Development Award, studying immunological mechanisms in cutaneous biology.

Over the past 25 years, Dr. Gordon’s clinical and research interests have focused on developing novel immunotherapies for psoriasis. He has led multiple clinical trials nationally and internationally and published over 250 papers, including first-author publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet, and JAMA. Dr. Gordon has served as the Center for Clinical Research Director at Northwestern and, until recently, the Chair of Dermatology at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Robert T. Brodell, MD is past founding chair of the department of dermatology (2012-22), professor and chair in the department of pathology, Billy S Guyton Distinguished Professor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC).  A graduate of Washington and Jefferson College ('75) and the University of Rochester School of Medicine ('79), he completed his dermatology and dermatopathology training at Barnes Hospital (Washington University in St Louis).  Dr Brodell was in solo private practice for 27 years in Warren, Ohio.   He has performed 1,980 lectures and directed 49 symposia. He has over 420 publications, 42 book chapters, 41 poster presentations, and has written three books:  The Diagnosis and Treatment of Warts: An Evidence Based Approach (Martin Dunitz, 2003); Tips and Tricks in Procedural Dermatology (Jaypee publishers, 2019); and, Dermatology in Rural Settings -- Organizational, Clinical, and Socioeconomic Perspectives (Springer, 2021).
An avid supporter of the American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay For Life (RFL) since 1992, he received the ACS St. George National Award for Distinguished and Exemplary Leadership (2003)   and was inducted into the RFL Hall of Fame (2005).

Fox, MD Memorial Award and Lectureship (2022) He was also Cleveland Cavaliers Fan of the Year in 1997.
